Question Flash: good or bad?

There are alot of arguments for the use and non use of flash.

Firstly, it looks good, and can add a brilliant effect to a website. Some flash work, esepcially some of the movies Ive seen made by ceonex can be breahtaking. They can also give great usability and novelty to a website.

ON the downside, they are 56k killers and can take ages to load. People could also feel they opverdo a website a bit, having a header that makes music, shines different colors and moves around alot.

So would you say Flash is definitely good in webdesign, or it should be left out for the new CSS based quick loading sites?

I'd say that Flash can be good, when used in appropiate areas. Some usage of flash is good, but a full flash site is going to far and by the time its loaded the users closed the window. But a really good nav bar or a great header can really add that little touch to a website.

What are your thoughts?

I'd agree that some flash is good but I tend to avoid it as it cannot be indexed by the search engines

I prefer CSS based design myself

I agree with your term 'appropiate'. Your users should be your first consideration.

I like to use Flash wherever I can.

According to Macromedia 95% of internet users have the flash 6 plugin. Not even that many have JavaScript enabled.

Flash sites dont have to be 56k killers, they can be kept lightweight, depends on what the customer wants. For example I made http://www.lawley.de completely in Flash, I dont think it takes that long to load does it?

Contrary to popular belief not everything HAS to blink and move ;-)

I know that its going to look the same across all browsers (nearly )

Downside as already mentioned is the search engine deficit, and the price compared to CSS and notepad.

I love Flash .. I know how to use it .... Also there are other soft.s to make flash works simplified ..

But the price is really high ..

I can help you with swish ... Fell free to tell me what you wanna know .. BTW : SWISH is a good software by which you can create good flash animations in minutes which if created with Flash will take hours .

It is easy .. if you know a bit flash animation then you can use it well .. just create frame by frame animation (As you do in flash) .. there are a lot of preset effects which are always useful .. there is also scrtipting features .. So go ahead and use it now ..

Here is a sample work I am creating (Not Complete yet) with SWISH >> feel free to tell how it looks >>

http://n.1asphost.com/wepayu/wepayu.html

Yes I know the menu (Yep the bar where these words are >> about us , contact .. etc) is not good/unique ... So I decided to change it soon .. and will put something new on it ..

oh hey.. so did you use SWISH to do that flash in the website? ..so alright.. SWISH is a program that creates Flash in an easier way.. is it?... or do you create Flash from Macromedia Flash first then use SWISH later on?

No .. Every thing from start to end of that site was created with Swish . I didn't used Flash for the animation .. just some touch in Jasc Paintshop pro for the background ..

Try it .. it is much easier than Flash
